Promoting social wellness in the elderly

Promoting Social Wellness In Elderly (Virtual Volunteering)

United Way Mumbai

Program Description

Need of the Project

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about fear and uncertainty, especially among the elderly. They rely on social connection more than most. With the current situation of the nationwide lockdowns and social distancing, they need social connections now more than ever.

Volunteer's Role:

Employee volunteers can promote social wellbeing by spending time with the elderly through virtual interactions.  By engaging seniors in a series of meaningful activities, volunteers would help spread warmth and create a sense of belonging. Through the virtual volunteering series, employee volunteers would conduct a series of activities that will address physical fitness, mental & social wellness and digital literacy for about 30 senior citizens at an old age home. They may conduct live sessions across 4 days on activities such as -

  • Zumba: Choreograph simple moves focusing on balance, motion & coordination.
  • Yoga: Instructions on basic yoga exercises and relaxation techniques.
  • Art & Craft: Instructions on art & craft activities – painting, origami, making paper bags, etc.
  • Music & Games: Organize team fun activities such as Antakshari, Housie, Pictionary, etc
  • Virtual Tours: Conduct virtual tours of place of interest such as historical monuments, national parks, etc. Talk about the history of place, art & culture, specialty of the region, etc.

Depending on the nature and scope of the activity, a group of employees will be divided across activities to be conducted over 4 days. Each group of employees will be required to conduct the given activity digitally over platforms like Zoom or Google Meet.
