Solid Waste Management and Sanitation (SPARSH)
Apollo Tyres Foundation

India generates over 60 million tonnes of waste, out of which about 69% is collected. It’s appalling to observe that only 30% of the collected waste is treated and the rest is taken to land fill sites. The ‘Swachh Bharat’ initiative is the need of the hour which aims to promote clean hygienic practices and use of proper sanitation. To support the cause, the organisation undertook initiative SPARSH, swachh banao. This initiative aims at providing comprehensive solution for better health and hygiene which includes proper waste management and promoting the use of toilets. SPARSH stands for : S- Segregate Waste, P- Practice Composting, A- Awareness Generation, R- Reduce-Reuse-Recycle, S- Safe Sanitation, H- Hygiene for All. Clean My Transport Nagar (CMTN), Clean My Village (CMV), Sanitation Management and End- of-Life Tyres (ELT) projects are initiated under SPARSH umbrella.
Further to support the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, organisation has also constructed toilet cum bathing space for the underprivileged communities around Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and Chinnapandur (Andhra Pradesh) manufacturing location.
ELT projects promotes recycling of waste tyres by constructing playgrounds. Apollo Tyres has been strategically evaluating various ways on how to increase the product life cycle through expansion of re-treading footprint, which reinforces the Re-use concept. In addition the organisation is also exploring various ways of using the ELT in innovative and yet useful ways such as play structures to steer away from land fill, which reinforces the Recycle concept.
