MelJol is a non-profit organization committed to empowering children, youth, women and communities to build the knowledge, skills, confidence and agency needed to overcome intergenerational poverty and create better futures. MelJol began in 1991 as a field action project of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), initiated by Prof. Jeroo Billimoria and Prof. Lata Narayan under the guidance of Prof. Armaity Desai. Its early work focused on bridging socioeconomic divides among children. Guided by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, MelJol subsequently expanded its work to address poverty, financial literacy, and gender inequality. It was formally registered as an independent Society and Public Trust in 1999. In 2001, MelJol introduced children`s savings groups and developed a social and financial education approach that later inspired Aflatoun International, established by Jeroo Billimoria in 2005 to take this model to children around the world. Today, MelJol works across Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, reaching children, youth, women and communities through programs like Aflatoun Integrated Life-skill education and employability program (AI-LEAP), Akshar Mitra, Young Leaders Programme, Nirmaan Initiative, GramArth and Integrated Child and Youth centric development Program (ICYCD).
