Trucking as an occupation has various occupational health hazards too. All the truck drivers work in irregular shifts, work long hours, have to keep sitting in same posture for long hours, have narrow working space inside the truck , sleep inside the truck in cramped space, handle heavy material and have job stress as they have ensure that the load reaches the destination in time and also have to face harassment at the hands of police and transport authorities. Thus many of them report symptoms like ringing in the ears, neck pain and low back pain, hypertension, ulcers in the digestive tract, back injuries, whiplash injuries and hemorrhoids. But very few truck drivers are able to access quality health services as transport locations are usually at the outskirts of the city with no /very little health facilities.
The SAFAR project aims to improve the quality of life of truckers by providing them easily accessible quality health services and road safety education. Some of the key activities of the SAFAR project are Free consultation for truckers by an MBBS doctor, Free medicines, Health & Nutrition Counseling, specialized services like Physiotherapy & eye screening. Along with that the project team engages truck drivers in behavior change communication activities like interpersonal communication sessions & interactive games etc.
