United Way of Baroda initiated the Shishu kit Project on 11th April 2018 on International Safe Motherhood Day. The aim of the project is to promote healthy nurturing of newborn babies, and to improve the quality care after delivery. The Shishu Kit project is targeted towards the government hospitals. When women come to these hospitals for delivery, they are usually unprepared. This means that they don’t carry the things that they and their babies would require at the time of post-delivery. Hence, the Shishu Kit is given to the women immediately after delivery. This kit comprises a total of 15 items including a bag, sanitary napkins, baby clothes (2 sets of shirts, nappies, gloves, and caps), baby wrap towel, plastic mattress, iron tablets, calcium tablets, a gown for mothers and baby care awareness leaflet. The distribution of this kit is done in order to provide for the basic items that the woman and her baby would require immediately after delivery.
Apart from the distribution of Shishu Kits, various Behavior Change Communication sessions (BCC) are conducted in the hospitals for the women. The sessions are conducted on various topics such as maternal nutrition, family planning importance, and methods, how to take care of newborn babies, and how to achieve mental health and stability in women. Various teaching aids are used while taking sessions such as PowerPoint presentations, live models, ICE material, posters, etc. Beneficiaries enjoy these sessions and they promptly respond to the communicator, sharing their experience and problems.
