Project Description

Education is one of the primary components of the Lebara foundation. We believe that by providing better quality education to children, we will enable the society towards economic development through contributing in breaking the poverty trap and improved productivity. Children living in displaced communities, slums and remote areas are deprived of quality education, even though they are attending government schools they lack structured educational system leading to school drop outs, less competence, lack of life skills etc.

To ensure that children have access to quality education, Lebara foundation started conducting after school tuitions inside refugee camps, slums, tribal areas etc. The tutor in the after-school tuitions aids the children to complete their assignments, prepare them for their school examinations and make them learn new and innovative concepts regarding their academics. This will enhance their knowledge and make them more competent. For the all-round personality development of the children, Lebara foundation through its implementing partners initiated children’s club, children parliament, libraries, summer camps, built parks in the camps and slums. Through these clubs, children get an opportunity to exhibit their talents and enrich them through the guidance of community volunteers. In addition to this, higher education assistance is provided to the deserving and needy children to continue their studies further.

Till year 2016 at least 1000 children were benefitted from the tuition centres run across the slums of Chennai, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Trichy and Madurai. To improve their language and computing skills, special classes were organized for children on spoken English and basic computing skills. Every year educational materials are supplied in the form of bags, notebooks, lunch boxes etc to the children who are part of Lebara’s programme.

Skill development programmes have been initiated as a means of moving the beneficiaries towards sustainability and these include Montessori teacher training, sports capacity building and talent enhancement through professional training. Around 20 mothers were enrolled for Montessori training at Kottapattu camp, Trichy. To motivate the 10th and 12th students pursue higher education, programs such as career guidance, talent support were organized in the camps and slums. This gives them an opportunity to aspire high and build confidence with themselves. These initiatives have enabled the children to enhance their scores in academics, upgrade their English language and computer skills and develop a wholesome personality through children’s clubs, summer camps, libraries, and parks. Around 12 children have received higher education support till 2016.

As a continuum effort, in 2017, Lebara reaches out through 22 tuition centres, 21 children’s club, 15 libraries, 8 children’s park and 2 spoken English centres. Till now, over 2000 children benefit through one or more services. Over 1800 children benefited through summer camps. Traditional and cultural exposure was the main theme of the summer camp this year. Lebara Foundation also have understood the importance of Life Skill Education and conducted a special programme to elucidate life skill coaching in a play way method.
