Project Description

Thalassemia is a rare sickle cell genetic disease due to abnormal surge of red blood cells disturbing the normal functioning of almost all main Hormonal glands and body parts like causing pigmentation i.e., change of skin color(excessive melanin ), deformity of body and expansion of bones,  liver cirrhosis, thrombosis, delayed puberty, osteoporosis, short stature and what not-thereby reducing the life of affected person to 15 t0 20 years and extended to a maximum of 35-40 years. He requires transfusion of blood at 5 to 7 days if it is old blood and 12-15 days if it is fresh blood. The weight of body and age are also determining factors for blood transfusion.

Mahavir International hold regular blood donation camps & Collect every year about 45000 Blood Units to provide fresh blood as far as possible also we are supporting the thalassemia patients by providing bedside filters or chelation or HIV medicines free of Cost, through the Govt (RBTC operated Blood banks) Provides free blood to children especially the Thalssaemics.

Thalassemia has two forms:-

  1. Thalassemia major
  2. Thalassemia minor

Thalassemia minor is a person who does not behave abnormally and lives normal life, But when two Thalssaemiacs minor types marry because of no awareness of their blood traits, the Chances of producing a Thalassemia Major are 25% & effect of this incognizance is every hour India is giving birth to a new thalassaemias Major Patient which is 10000 new thalassemia patients every year.

Thalassemia test before marriage or in case two got married or committed to marrying the test should be done at the time of Conceive the baby. In this case, every pregnant female should get tested by HBA2 & If She found Minor Thalassaemiac Fetus (CVS test ) is to be done. There are about 1.50 lakh thalassemia in India as per Govt Figures. We intend to stop Thalassemia by taking the following measures.

1. Preventive

  • Spreading awareness about thalassemia so people understand the terms & Know their thalassemia status at an early age
  • Preventing marriages of prohibited blood groups and those affected by thalassemia by reach out program
  • Introducing Free/low-cost testing procedures to test the Thalassaemia Traits

2. Medical Aid- Post-Thallasemia

  • To build a team of voluntary blood donors for Thalassemia affected for infusion at regular intervals. Currently, we have already developed a Pool of Donors in NCR as well as connected in a network with a nationwide Team of Coordinators to get available the blood anywhere in India in Case of Emergency
  • Setting up blood banks & Thalassemia Day Care centers facilitates 500 Thalassaemiacs every month for safe blood transfusion.
  • Treatment of thalassemia by educating the families about HLA tests/ matching/ Registering in International Registries to ‘Find out the Bone Marrow Donor for their Child’.
  • Starting a Donor Registry who can register healthy Blood Donors & convince them to become Stem Cell/ Bone marrow Donors who can donate bone marrow to Thalassaemiacs or Blood Cancer Patients to let them survive healthy life.
