The project for Construction of School Building for Special Needs Children

Organization : Ritham Charitable Trust

Location : Tamil Nadu

Project Description

We are willing to extend special education and other services such as Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, and medicines to more students. But the existing school building is a rental one and we are facing the below-mentioned problems:

 1. Special needs children who are wheelchair-bound or limited mobility, face problems in reaching the school as the school van can't reach the school premises due to crooked roads. It is a day-to-day problem that students are embarked on the main road and brought to the school by walking or rolling wheelchairs on bumpy roads. This situation becomes terrible on bad weather days and our staff put enormous effort to bring them in.

 2. The school doesn’t have its own playground still the students are competing in state-level meets and winning medals. There is a ground in front of our school premises owned by a particular community which we use for our sports activity. The playground doesn’t have any sports facilities.

 3. The dining area becomes unusable during rainy days.

 4. Space constraint for vocational training center which we recently started for our adult elderly students.

 5. In general space constraints for conducting parental meetings, mass Yoga programs, and other therapies. And also can accommodate only 120 students.

For a spacious school, we planned to buy land of about 2 to 5 acres which can hold about 500 students. We searched for donors who can donate their land or sponsor money for the purchase. It was really hard for us to identify such a big philanthropist. Later we decided to start collecting funds in a small scale to achieve this big dream. As a result, we have purchased our maiden land of 30 cents (1,200m²) in the outskirts of Rajapalayam.

Special Features of Project

Constructing the school building is the primary cause of the project and our trust requires huge money to complete it. As Ritham Charitable trust is in a semi-urban area, we wouldn't expect a higher amount of funds from local Philanthropists for this project. So, we hereby are requesting JAPAN's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP) to sponsor the construction of our school building.

On 10 March 2021, a signing ceremony was held at the official residence of the Consul-General of Japan in Chennai to award a US$90,841 (6,557,811.79 Indian rupees) grant for the construction of a school for children with special needs. The grant was provided through the Japanese government’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

Through this project, the Ritham Charitable Trust built a special school with 14 rooms including classrooms, vocational training rooms, and physiotherapy and speech therapy rooms, which will accommodate more than 130 students and ensure a safe and healthy learning environment.

On 27 June 2022, Mr. Taga Masayuki, Consul-General of Japan in Chennai, inaugurated Ritham Special School for children with special needs.

Now the space-related constraints are totally rectified. Students have easy access to classrooms, Physical Therapy rooms, Dining halls, washrooms, etc. They really enjoyed very well in the safe and healthy environment.
