On a door-to-door survey taken by our school teachers showed that there are still so many special children living in and around Rajapalayam. Many of them have Cerebral Palsy (CP) a non-progressive neurological physical disability, intellectually challenged, and multiple disabilities. Many of these children have never been to school and are usually left alone in the house without any daycare.
Our motive is to teach them how to improve their daily living skills, such as using the bathroom, getting dressed, and eating on their own; communication skills, such as understanding what is said and being able to answer; social skills with peers, family members, adults, and others. And where possible educate them for an independent, productive life.
The education and training of these children differ a lot from that of normal children. Their syllabus has to include self-dependence, etiquette conversation, everyday activities, etc. While chalking out their syllabus their level of I.Q. and behavioral problems have to be considered. Their home environment is required to be weighed in while chalking out the syllabus. Since there is no safe method to teach these children, each child is in a class by himself requiring special attention. It is truly a Herculean task to inculcate self-independence among Intellectually Challenged children.
Many were not getting adequate attention to their problems from their family because of the lack of awareness of their parents. They are usually mild to severely affected children. We see the kids as people with rights, who must be extended the facilities available to other kids. Whatever talent they have must be given a chance to blossom. The children show remarkable improvement in all aspects after started attending school.
We identified potential students and tried to convince their parents to bring their kids to school. We also counseled them that their kid’s day-to-day chorus will definitely improve if they come to the special school. Though they agreed on this in principle the school’s strength didn't improve. Later only we came to know the parents were daily wage earners and if they bring their kids to the school their livelihood will get affected. And it is also hard to take these kids on the public transport system.
From 2011 we plan to give free special education, free medicine, and free transport for all below-poverty-line kids. We apply to many organizations after that our effort we are listed on the Give India website. In beginning, we started providing free education, needed therapies & transport to the underprivileged. Later we extend this facility for health care too.
At first, we give free special education for 32 students only. Parents’ burden was reduced by free special education. Now it was changed into Monthly Donation Option (MDO). Now we give free special education to 68 students from this program. After the program, new enrollment from the villages and underprivileged students is more.
The above has helped us to reach more parents and let them be convinced to send their kids to our school.
