OSS program started with the thought of social responsibility and a moral obligation to make spine care affordable and easily accessible to the non-affording millions. The poor and needy patients were identified and picked up from both the rural and urban settings by our team of doctors. To gain society’s trust, one needs to provide safe and good outcomes.
At first an initial funding was assisted by few implant and consumable companies in the USA. The funds were also raised by us at a personal level.
The charity funding is used to finance treatment in a hospital based facility. The charity arranges equipment, instruments and implants for carrying out successful surgeries in children, adolescents and adults. The charity arranges teams consisting of specialist surgeons, nurses and other operating room personnel based abroad for the annual surgical camps. Regular clinics and surgical procedures are undertaken by the UK, USA and India based qualified surgeons and nurses. The surgeons and nurses in the team train medical professionals and raise the standard of care in the region.
After much planning and acquiring needed equipment and spinal instrumentation the first OSS mission trip was launched in 2006. Like many endeavors of it’s kind, the first few years of OSS were the most difficult. We faced many challenges including raising funds, obtaining spinal implants and instruments, garnering local support, operating in less than ideal conditions, and recruiting operating room personnel. Despite the many challenges OSS has persevered and continues to achieve the goals we set to change the lives of those we treat. The success of OSS is in no small part due to the amazing talent of those who selflessly donate their time and skill to our mission including nurses, surgical technicians, anesthesiologists, neurophysiologists, orthopedic and neurosurgical spinal surgeons and spinal implant company consultants.
The 2nd 5year saw expansion of work and logistic framework to develop the unit. Each year a team of volunteers including surgeons, nurses, anaesthesiologists, neuromonitoring specialists and spinal equipment technicians travel to Kolkata, to carry on the work of OSS. The important recognition came from the Scoliosis Research Society, USA. when OSS was invited to Anchorage, USA for the SRS annual meeting in Sept 2014, to speak on “Deformity Mission Kolkata”. This was recognized as the 1st Global Outreach program based in India was an important milestone in OSS’ efforts to continue reaching its goals set out nearly ten years ago.
OSS successfully completed the 1st pilot project held for 2weeks from12-24th Nov 2006. Notable highlights of the 1st program were:
