In the heart of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, a beacon of hope shines brightly. This beacon is Samvedna, a dynamic non-governmental organization (NGO) that fights tirelessly against caste-based commercial sexual exploitation and human sex trafficking. Having a mission to empower vulnerable communities and create a safer, more just world.  Samvedna’s journey begins with a powerful mission: to eradicate human trafficking and sexual exploitation.  Samvedna's  focus areas are :

  • Education: They believe education is the key to transformation. Samvedna ensures that marginalized children have access to quality education..
  • Gender Equality: Samvedna challenges norms, advocating for equal rights for all.
  • Protection: Survivors are protected, and further victimization is prevented.
  • Livelihood: By creating sustainable livelihood opportunities, they break the chains of exploitation

Samvedna zeroes in on the Bedia community, disproportionately vulnerable to trafficking. In six districts—Bhopal, Rajgarh, Vidisha, Raisen, Guna, and Sagar—they engage with over 5,000 Bedia children across 60 villages. Their holistic approach addresses immediate needs while aiming for long-term change.  Samvedna collaborates with governmental bodies, NGOs, and local communities. To further its mission, Samvedna believes that it is imperative to build a strong sense of community among children and increase interaction among the youth. Sports play a crucial role in strengthening ties amongst children and youth who otherwise don’t actively engage with each other. The Ban Patang program seeks to introduce sports among the community youth and children with the dual aim of promoting physical fitness and making stronger peer groups in the villages. Some major objectives of this program include:

  • Children winning scholarships and playing tournaments at state and national levels.
  • Increased attendance and participation in school and Pankh classes (Education Aid class run by Samvedna).
  • Children who have attained scholarships are now a source of pride for the village and act as motivation and inspiration for other children.
  • Ensuring that children are engaged in healthy activities and are spending their time well.
  • Learning to enjoy the sport, understanding the importance of sports in their life, and not making it another stressor for them.
  •

To strengthen sports as a strategy to prevent the entry of minor girls into prostitution, Samvedna organized a state-level sports meet in collaboration with the Sports and Youth Welfare Department of Madhya Pradesh. A total of 400 children between the ages of 12 to 18 participated in this competition, which ignited a spark within the children and community. In several villages, children started preparing grounds to practice games, and boys and girls formed teams to practice running, Kabbadi, etc.

To give this momentum a direction, Samvedna appointed a sports teacher for three villages - Menkhedi, Rusiya, and Dulai - as a pilot. In May 2022, Samvedna appointed a sports teacher to promote cost-effective and Olympic-recognized games like running, Kabadi, Lung jump, etc. Children prepare their sports kit at their own expense and also participate in different sports competitions at their expense. In July and August 2023, the Kabbadi team of Sukhha secured the first position in the MLA Cup, whereas Dulai’s Kabbadi team secured the third position.

A total of 150 ( 102: Boys and 48: Girls) children from the Samvedna project participated In Block level sports competition Khelo MP Youth Sports organized by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Welfare government of Madhya Pradesh   Out of these 7 represented their districts and three are shortlisted for representing state.
