Recognizing these needs, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) has stepped up with 2 effective initiatives: a plantation drive and a free NEET coaching program under its CSR initiative, Sushrut. SECL’s green initiative aims to restore biodiversity, and it pledges to plant around 38 lakh saplings across Chhatisgarh and Madhya Pradesh in the coming years.

SECL’s Sushrut program further provides free residential NEET coaching for local class 12 students to support them with resources to excel in medical entrance exams. South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) is making significant strides in environmental sustainability through its ambitious tree plantation initiatives. Recently, SECL planted around 1,46,675 saplings across 8 districts in Chhattisgarh and 3 districts in Madhya Pradesh, covering over 56 hectares. 

This effort is part of a more extensive nationwide campaign launched by Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, to enhance green cover across all coal public sector undertakings (PSUs) in India. The initiative aligns with the ongoing “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, which emphasizes the importance of planting trees in honor of mothers.

In a long-term commitment to environmental stewardship, SECL has announced an investment of INR 169 crore for tree plantation activities over the next five years. The company aims to plant around 26 lakh saplings in Chhatisgarh and 12 lakh saplings in Madhya Pradesh between 2023-24 and 2027-28. This project is expected to be executed in partnership with state-run agencies, ensuring the saplings are maintained for four years following initial planting. 

Notably, SECL is also adopting the innovative Miyawaki method, which promotes rapid forest growth by planting native species densely, thereby enhancing biodiversity and ecological balance in the coal belt regions.

In addition to its environmental initiatives, SECL is also focused on educational support through its CSR program. The company is inviting applications for free residential coaching aimed at preparing students for the National Entrance cum Eligibility Test (NEET) 2025. This program is designed to assist students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly those residing near SECL's operational areas.

Partnering with the Chhattisgarh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam (CGRVVN) and Madhya Pradesh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam (MPRVVN), SECL is focused on maximizing green cover in mining-affected regions, enhancing biodiversity, and improving local air quality and the community’s green spaces.

SECL's plantation efforts include innovative techniques like the Japanese Miyawaki method, which accelerates green cover growth in areas impacted by coal mining operations. A pilot initiative using this technique has been successfully launched near the Gevra coal mine, transforming barren land into dense forests within a short span. The free, fully residential NEET coaching program offers comprehensive support to eligible students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in coal belt regions. Partnering with a renowned Bilaspur-based coaching institute, SECL provides NEET aspirants with a robust learning environment, including national-level test series, lodging, and meals. This initiative aims to bridge the educational gap and support talented students, giving them a solid foundation to excel in medical entrance exams.
