U Mumba and Swades Foundation’s CSR Play: Powering Rural Maharashtra with Solar Energy
Electricity is more than just a convenience; it's a lifeline. Yet, for many rural communities across India, uninterrupted access to electricity remains a distant dream.
In villages across Maharashtra, especially in remote areas, power outages are frequent, and in some households, grid connectivity has never existed. This lack of access impacts children's education, limits job opportunities, compromises safety after dark, and reduces overall quality of life.
But change can be sparked from unexpected places, even from the kabaddi mat.
In a heartening move blending athletic excellence with purpose, U Mumba, one of India’s leading Pro Kabaddi League teams, teamed up with Swades Foundation to address this very issue.
Their initiative transformed kabaddi achievements, Super Tackles and Super Raids, into solar lighting for homes in rural Maharashtra. Through this unique CSR program, sports met sustainability, and the result was 160 homes now shining bright with clean, renewable energy.
Bridging Sport with Social Purpose
In the fast-paced world of sports, it’s easy for the spotlight to remain fixed on points scored and games won. But U Mumba looked beyond the mat. Partnering with Swades Foundation, their official social impact partner for Season 11 of the Pro Kabaddi League, they introduced a performance-linked CSR model, one that converted on-field success into real-world impact.
For every Super Tackle, 15 rural homes were powered with solar home lighting kits. Every Super Raid led to 10 homes being lit. Over the course of the season, U Mumba recorded 8 Super Tackles and 4 Super Raids, leading to the electrification of 160 rural homes across Maharashtra.
What made this initiative truly stand out was its tangible, measurable outcome. Fans were no longer just cheering for their team; they were also celebrating the real-time impact being made in villages far from the stadium lights.
Every strategic move on the kabaddi mat echoed with significance off the field, offering a model of how sport can be used as a tool for lasting development.
A Hero’s Welcome in Nashik
To bring this campaign full circle, U Mumba star player Ajit Chouhan visited Badagi village, located in Peth taluka of Nashik district, one of the communities benefiting from the initiative. In a heartfelt ceremony, Ajit symbolically switched on the solar lighting system, marking not just the start of clean energy but also a moment of inspiration for the villagers.
Ajit’s visit turned into a celebration. In Gaidhond, a model “Dream Village” created by the Swades Foundation, local children and residents gathered to meet their kabaddi hero. Excitement filled the air as the kids posed for pictures and shared their dreams.
For many, seeing a professional athlete visit their small village was a once-in-a-lifetime moment. More than just an event, it reinforced that their stories mattered, that the benefits of sport could reach them too.
A Proven Partnership for Change
This is not the first time U Mumba and the Swades Foundation have joined forces for social good. Their partnership began in 2023, when they rolled out a large-scale tree plantation drive under Swades’ “New Orchard Programme.” Through this initiative, 4,300 fruit tree saplings were planted in Raigad, with the dual aim of boosting green cover and increasing farmer incomes over time.
That collaboration set the tone for what’s now becoming a long-term, impact-driven alliance. With U Mumba bringing visibility, energy, and engagement, and Swades Foundation providing on-ground expertise and implementation, the partnership has emerged as a model for how sports franchises can contribute beyond entertainment.
What sets this partnership apart is its focus on results. From the number of homes lit to saplings planted, each initiative is backed by data and impact metrics, proving that CSR need not be vague or ceremonial. It can be real, grounded, and life-changing when done with intention.
Impact Created
The outcomes of this season’s CSR campaign go far beyond numbers. A total of 160 rural homes across Maharashtra have been powered with sustainable solar energy, 120 through 8 Super Tackles and 40 more through 4 Super Raids. Villages like Badagi and Gaidhond are now enjoying improved quality of life, especially after sunset.
The initiative has led to safer environments for women and children, better study conditions for students, and reduced reliance on kerosene lamps, cutting both costs and indoor pollution.
Perhaps most significantly, it has uplifted community morale, with residents inspired by the involvement of sports icons. This isn’t just about lighting homes, it’s about restoring hope, dignity, and the confidence to dream.
Way Forward
The success of this campaign has laid a strong foundation for future impact. U Mumba and Swades Foundation are committed to scaling the initiative to reach more communities by identifying energy-deficient villages not just in Maharashtra, but across India.
Their future plans include incorporating solar street lighting to enhance outdoor safety, introducing solar-powered digital learning tools to improve rural education, and expanding into livelihood-driven initiatives that use sport as a platform to create jobs and skill development opportunities.
This initiative proves that impactful CSR doesn’t always require complex models or massive budgets. Sometimes, all it takes is a purposeful partnership and a creative spark, like turning kabaddi tackles into solar lights.
Together, U Mumba and Swades Foundation are lighting up more than homes; they’re illuminating a future where sport, business, and community move forward together. One match at a time. One village at a time!
