CDRI Releases Funding to Advance Urban Resilience across 16 Cities in South Asia and Latin America

Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) has announced funding for the implementation of five urban resilience projects spanning 16 cities in Brazil, Bhutan, Honduras, India, and Sri Lanka.

 

Backed by a USD 2.47 million commitment from CDRI’s trust fund, IRAF, these projects will benefit nearly 2.9 million people over the next two years, generating estimated savings of USD 91 million in operations and maintenance, and influencing infrastructure investments exceeding USD 161 million in these 16 cities.

CDRI expresses gratitude to the Government of India for its financial support of this initiative through the trust fund, IRAF.

 

On the Ground Impact:

  • Brazil (Porto Alegre): Nature-based solutions and data tools to reduce flooding risks for 70,000 residents.
  • Bhutan (Thimphu, Phuntsholing & Samtse): Early warning systems and resilient public space planning benefiting 275,000 people.
  • Honduras, Sula Valley (Potrerillos, Pimienta, and Villanueva): Climate-proofing healthcare infrastructure for 50,000 vulnerable residents.
  • Chikkaballapur District, Karnataka, India (Chikkaballapura, Bagepalli, Gowribidanur, Shidlaghatta, Gudibande, and Chintamani): Implementing risk-informed water security strategies to serve over 300,000 people.
  • Sri Lanka (Colombo, Kotte, and Kelaniya): Real-time water monitoring and infrastructure upgrades improving quality for over 2 million residents.

    CDRI DG Amit Prothi said announcing the funding, “These projects showcase CDRI’s data-driven, inclusive approach to urban resilience, empowering cities worldwide to address evolving urban challenges in health, water, and climate, through locally anchored, globally informed resilience planning solutions”.

    These resilient infrastructure projects in Latin America and South Asia will demonstrate how integrated planning, innovation, and community participation can foster climate-resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban development.
