Skill development Institute, Bhubaneswar (SDI-B) was established on 9th May 2016 with an aim to provide opportunities for skilling to the unemployed and underprivileged youth of Odisha and to provide skilled man power to the industry. Initially, SDI-B started operation in 2 trades viz. Industrial Electrician & Welder. However, with increasing demand of skilled manpower, 6 new courses were added viz. Computer Data Application (only for girls), Fitter Fabrication, Instrumentation Technician, Pipe Fitter (City gas Distribution), Solar PV Installation and LPG Mechanic. About 240 students per batch are being skilled in 8 trade courses, which are of 3 to 6 months duration each. Since inception, 810 placements are done. Hon’ble President of India laid the foundation of the of the permanent campus of SDI-B on 18.03.2018 at Taraboi, Jatni, Odisha, which will be a mega-world-class model skill academy be set up with technical support from National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). Once functional, about 3,000 to 4,000 youth will be trained every year in 16 regular trades pertaining to the hydrocarbon sector and local industries.

3. International Automobile Centre of Excellence (i-ACE)

The Company through ICICI Foundation has carried out Skill Development Project. ICICI Foundation’s efforts are managed by an in-house team with direct project implementation capabilities. Currently, ICICI Foundation works on various programmes on vocational skill development with the objective of developing the capabilities of individuals so that they can earn a sustainable livelihood for their families. Apart from skill development, these programmes support the trainees by facilitating job opportunities or providing market linkages. ICICI Foundation operates 26 skill development training centres under ICICI Academy for Skills in 19 states. These centres provide industry-relevant, job-oriented training on a pro bono basis in 12 technical disciplines and office skills. With a comprehensive approach which ensures employment opportunities for all successful trainees, these centres are equipped with state-of the- art practical labs to support and enhance learning. The training also includes modules on financial literacy and life skills. ICICI Academy for Skills opened two new centres – one each in Dehradun and Gorakhpur – during fiscal 2019. A significant achievement of this programme is that 100% of the trainees who had opte for job placement had found suitable employment with various organisations.

6. Project Parivartan, Financial Literacy and Sustainable Livelihood Initiative

Under Parivartan, the Bank has provided both on-farm training to upskill farmers as well as placement linked training. Bank’s Training Centre in Bhubaneswar provides training to youth and women in hospitality, tourism, telecom, retail and health care. Over 1,272 youth have been placed in 100+ companies and institutions in Odisha. They have also provided training in fields such as communication skills, agriculture techniques, and livestock management among others.
Sustainable Livelihood Initiative: Empowering Women through Financial Inclusion Located 40 kilometres west of Guwahati, Bihdia Chaygaon is a small village of 600 people. The community here earns its livelihood via a largely unorganised cottage industry. For the women, weaving and agriculture are the primary sources of income. They recognised the potential for the empowerment of women through financial inclusion and entrepreneurial upskilling. Today, Gitanjali Hira, Nilima Kalita, Mira Nath and thousands of others like them across the country have become self-reliant with a little help from HDFC Bank’s Sustainable Livelihood Initiative (SLI). Through this initiative, the Bank has reached out to over 96 lakh households across 27 states through credit facilities, financial literacy and capacity building programmes. The primary objective of Sustainable Livelihood Initiative is to bring about Parivartan by creating sustainable communities. This is done by helping women in rural areas break away from the vicious cycle of financial dependence to one of growth and opportunities.

The Company imparts technical information, prepare content and deliver training modules. Asian Paints collaborated with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to deepen the impact of skill development programme. In order to strengthen the ‘Skill India’ initiatives of the Government of India, contribution was made to six Skill Development Institutes at Rae Bareilly, Ahmedabad, Visakhapatnam, Kochi, Guwahati and Bhubaneswar for the promotion of higher education and employability skills. Other unique initiatives were also undertaken which included long term skilling of differently abled youth and learning labs for differently abled youth in Khordha district, setting up of Modular furniture skill development-cum-production centre in YSR Kadapa district in association with Andhra Pradesh Prison Department. Different locations have different and diverse labour demands and needs depending on the opportunities like infrastructure and industries available in these locations. It is in line with these demand based needs that diverse training skills like electrical, welding, hospitality, driving, tailoring, beautician course, etc. are identified and imparted to underprivileged youth in these areas through our Swavalamban program. The module also provides other capacity building and soft skills required for these youth to sustain their employment and earn a livelihood for themselves and their family.

9. Upgradation of ITIs

The Company continued to support over 110 government ITIs across the country, as per a five-year ITI development plan. Various intervention areas under this plan include upgrading workshop infrastructure, providing training on manufacturing trades, enhancing industry exposure for trainers and students, and imparting soft skills to make students industry-ready. The automobile trades of Motor Mechanic Vehicle, Auto Body Paint, Auto Body Repair are upgraded in supported ITIs, as per the skills required at automobile workshops. 61% of students evaluated from the automobile trades at supported ITIs cleared the Suzuki Basic test (technical and psychometric aspects) compared to 40% from the non-adopted ITIs. In all, over 8,000 students graduated from the Government ITIs supported by the Company.

Skills-for-Market Training (SMART) is the Foundation’s flagship programme in employability. It is built on the vision of an educated, enlightened and employed India, and a belief that educated and skilled youth are the country’s true strength. In 2018-19, the Company trained close to 19,000 young women and men under its SMART program, of which 1,477 were persons with disabilities.
