Below are some of the best initiatives undertaken in sports under CSR by corporate houses in FY 2018-19:

1.  Promoting Grassroots Sports

Name of Company: Reliance Industries Limited

Total Expenditure on the Project: INR 40.93 Cr.

Total Prescribed CSR in 2018-19: INR 811.16 Cr.

The Company supported Reliance Foundation Education and Sports for All initiative‘s support towards the education of underprivileged children by partnering with 14 NGOs and working at the grassroots level. These NGOs focus on encouraging sports, literacy and life skills among the children. Under this initiative, a Digital Learning Van, embedded with technology, has been providing quality education to more than 4,000 children from 10 government schools in Mumbai and Thane districts. Together, these initiatives have positively impacted 0.2 million children.

2. Football Academy

Hindustan Zinc has initiated a massive program directed at achieving grassroots development as well as excellence in football in Rajasthan. ZF Schools (Football for All) – Uses football as a tool for social development and ensuring young kids have a platform to express themselves through football. With the philosophy that “every child should have an opportunity to play”, ZF has set up community football schools across six operating locations of the Company. Over 2,000 children receive football training at these academies on a weekly basis by All India Football Federation certified coaches. ZF Academy (Football for Excellence) - Nurturing talent to develop future football stars for the state and the country. At the heart of this initiative is a Residential Academy with world-class facilities at Zawar and the country’s first ever ‘technology-hinged football training’ centre. The Academy is currently training its first under-14 batch of 32 children where they are coached using innovative training programs with equal emphasis on learning and playing.

3. Promoting Sports Activities

Total Expenditure on the Project: INR 10.19 Cr.

Tata Steel engages employees, their families and the community in sporting activities through it’s:

  • Sports academies (Tata Football Academy, Tata Archery Academy and Naval Tata Hockey Academy) Extension centres run along with Sports Authorities of India (Athletics and boxing).
  • Training centres covering 17 disciplines, including basketball, badminton, volleyball, table tennis and chess.

    4. Providing Financial Support and Promoting Sports Education

    Location: Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh  

    Total Expenditure on the Project: INR 9.18 Cr.

    The Company contributed towards sports in the following ways:

  • Extended financial support for setting up of a Water Sports Center in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh for promotion of water sports and for conducting a water sports event therein.
  • Sports Education Programme for development of sports in Schools in 30 Schools in the Districts of Bastar, Rajnandgaon, Kabirdham and Mahasamund Districts of Chhattisgarh has been initiated.
  • Brief about the Company: NMDC is India's single largest iron ore producer, presently producing about 30 million tonnes of iron ore from 3 fully mechanized mines.

    SAIL regularly organizes inter-village sports tournaments, extending support to major national sports events & tournaments. Also, supporting and coaching aspiring sportsmen and women through its residential sports academies at Bokaro (Football), Rourkela (Hockey) - with world class astro-turf ground, Bhilai (Athletics for boys), Durgapur (Athletics for girls) and Kiriburu, Jharkhand (Archery). Cultural events like Chhattisgarh Lok Kala Mahotsav, Gramin Lokotsav are organised every year.

    6. National Sports Development

    Location: Rajasthan

    Total Expenditure on the Project: INR 5.8 Cr.

    Total Prescribed CSR in FY 2018-19: INR 2.2 Cr.

    TCI has established Urmila Sports Academy at Nyangal Bari village in Churu (Dist.), Rajasthan. The academy serves as a platform to budding and seasoned athletes and helps them enhance their skills. The infrastructure and facilities of the Academy matches international standards and are capable of being used for the conduct of National and International Sports Events.

    7. Running of Sports Academy

    Name of the Company: Central Coalfields Limited

    Location: Jharkhand

    Total Expenditure on the Project: INR 5.28 Cr.

    Total Prescribed CSR in FY 2018-19: INR 45.57 Cr.

    The Company supported Jharkhand State Sports Promotion Society (JSSPS) which was formulated to run the Sports Academy with a joint investment from CCL CSR Fund and State Government of Jharkhand. As on date, around 348 sports cadets in the Age group 8-12 years are undergoing sports training at Sports Academy, Hotwar along with formal schooling, boarding and lodging facilities with an ultimate aim to bring laurels to the country in Olympics 2024. The sports cadets are being trained in 9 sports discipline i.e. Athletics, Wrestling, Archery, Football, Taekwondo, Boxing, Shooting, Weightlifting and cycling. Till date these cadets of Sports Academy have received 154 Gold, 89 Silver and 77 Bronze medals in competitions held at state and national levels.     8. Support for creating Olympic champions

    Location: Maharashtra

    Total Expenditure on the Project: INR 4.35 Cr.

    The Company has provided assistance for setting up "Centre for Advanced medical rehabilitation cum high performance centre for sport development". The centre will undertake Athlete Development, Regular and Professional Training, as well as have facilities for Advanced and Speedy Rehabilitation.

    9. Sports Promotion

    Name of the Company: IndusInd Bank Limited

    Location: Pan India

    Total Expenditure on the Project: INR 3.88 Cr.

    Total Prescribed CSR in FY 2018-19: INR 88.61 cr.

    The Company collaborates with the organisations dedicated to enhancing social development and providing equal access and opportunity to all sections of society through sports.

  • It supports 60 talented girl athletes from across India, mostly belonging to low-income families, to be developed into National and International champions in the disciplines of Boxing, Judo and Wrestling.
  • It has partnered with Go Sports Foundation to make a visible difference in the life of Indian Para-athletes
  • It has also adopted the Indian Blind Cricket teams as principal sponsors with the Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI), the sports arm of Samarthanam Trust. Through this Programme, it not only supports their coaching, training, nutrition and fitness needs, but also promotes the team and its achievements in public domain, to garner support and inspire others, while attempting to break social prejudices about people with visual disability.

    10. Project Khelo Hero

    Name of the Company: Hero MotoCorp Limited

    Location: Uttarakhand

    Total Expenditure on the Project: INR 2.63 Cr.

    Total Prescribed CSR in FY 2018-19: INR 93.72 Cr.

    Under this initiative, the Company developed sports infrastructure in over 50 schools. The support was extended to more than 2,000 athletes, amateur boxers under the legendary Mary Kom and Paralympic athletes. The support for Paralympics has been extended with an objective to help build a country of athletes across abilities. During the previous year, support was extended to ~200 para athletes taking the total to over 300. Initiatives were also taken at the state level including the organization of Khel Mahakumbh in Uttarakhand.
