Larsen & Toubro spends INR 40.47 crore on skill development under its CSR initiatives in FY 18-19

Larsen & Toubro is a multinational company based out of India and headquartered in Mumbai at Maharashtra. With the inception of Companies’ CSR Rules 2014, L&T has commenced its work in the stream of Corporate Social Responsibility. The company follows a strategic approach to impact various marginalised communities scattered across India. L&T works in areas like water resource management and digital financial inclusion. The company is targeted to uplift rural folks by creating earning opportunities and further nurturing them with the needed facilities. It is also serious about empowering women micro entrepreneurs in the rural areas and further helps them balance their ecosystem by generating financial stability and sustainable livelihood.

The three core dimensions of the CSR policy of the company are creating community welfare, participation of them in the mainstream activities and generating ownership. The main aim remains extending sustainable solutions in order to create long lasting benefit for the communities. L&T is determined to help out the communities to gain strength and create a sustainable livelihood and further stand tall and operate without the assistance of the company. The CSR team is a bunch of vibrant folks extremely skilled and optimistic to carry out the set purpose. The CSR approach of the company is designed in three simple steps namely impacting the society, scaling up the level of impact and ensuring sustainability. This is designed to cater to the benefit of all the stakeholders.

One part of the CSR work of L&T is set to skill and train young minds of the country. The motive is simple: to train the youth to design their path of growth and further contribute to the economy. Special attention is laid on rural school dropouts. Attention is paid to encourage and motivate them to skill themselves and find a source of livelihood. Thus the company has founded nine Construction Skills Training Institutes (CSTIs) across various locations in India like Bengaluru, Kanchipuram, Hyderabad, Delhi, Cuttack, Raigad, Pikhuwa, Ahmedabad and Kolkata. A total budget of 40.47 crore is assigned for the development of the project. The first CSTI was constructed in the year 1995. The foundation of the skilling institution is parts of the dream of helping youth fulfil their aspiration to be a part of the construction industry of the country. Skill specific training in various departments is imparted in the program. The numerous departments of the CSTIs are Formwork Carpentry, Masonry, Bar Bending & Steel Fixing, Electrical skilling, Scaffolding and Plumbing & Sanitary. The curriculums of the trades were designed keeping in mind numerous Qualification Packs (QP) and National Occupational Standards (NOS). The duration of the course varies from 1 to 3 months with practical and theoretical training in the ratio 4:1. The training equips the students to mend themselves in order to deliver utmost professionalism in the most difficult circumstances. The training aims to bring out the hidden potential of the students and help them put it to the best possible use.

All the students enrolled in the CSTIs are placed with 100% guarantee right after the completion of the training project. L&T absorbs many pass outs and further creates opportunities for them in other companies through sub contract. The option of engaging as an apprentice through the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) is also open. This entitles them a monthly stipend of 10000 rupees. Moreover, L&T offers various positions in its Building, Maintenance, Transportation and Communication departments. The already pass outs have bagged themselves jobs in locations like Airports, Software parks, Steel plants and Ports. L&T is alert in training and up skilling the teachers in the institution and keeping their training in line with the new changes in the industry. Every six months ToT programs are arranged in association with the Construction Skill Development Council of India for the trainers. Modern technology and machineries are used to set up the labs, whereby the students could benefit the most with the latest process of skilling. Along with books various e-learning portals are made available to the students to expose them beyond the boundary of the institute. Various counselling sessions are organised to take care of the mental health of the students and also monitor their anxiety, if any.
