Rejuvenation of Water Storage Tanks in Rural Bangalore Revives Water Ecosystem in Two Villages
United Breweries Ltd. and S M Sehgal Foundation inaugurated the Hydalu and Tyagadahalli/Bettahalli water storage tanks in Nelamangala, Bangalore Rural, Karnataka, which have been rejuvenated under Project Jal Sanchay. The tanks were handed over to the community in an event held on August 1, 2023, at Nelamangala.
Project Jal Sanchay is aligned to UBL’s core Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) focus area– ‘Water’ to meaningfully contribute to both water conservation and sustainable social development of communities. Nelamangala Taluka is known for its traditional water storage tanks, which collect and store rainwater. However, over the years, the storage capacity of these tanks has been significantly reduced due to siltation. These tanks, after desilting, will play a crucial role in providing water for domestic and agricultural purposes, while recharging groundwater.
According to a UBL spokesperson, “We are driven by our value of ‘Care for people and planet’. Through our CSR initiatives, we undertake various water conservation programmes that facilitate water replenishment and recharge. By effectively utilizing rainwater runoff, project – Jal Sanchay, contributes to improving groundwater levels and addressing water scarcity issues in the community.”
Ms. Anjali Makhija, Trustee and Chief Executive Officer, S M Sehgal Foundation, stated, “The Nelamangala water conservation project increases water availability in the villages through the development of tanks and also establishes Tank User Groups, which serve as community sustainability mechanisms for effective management of the water harvesting structures created."
Members present at the event included Mr. D Nagesh Kumar (Deputy Commissioner of Excise), Mr. HD Harsha (Panchayat President), and representatives from UBL-Mr. Sachin Ramdas Jaybhaye (Brewery Head) and Ms. Jainee Nathwani (Head - CSR and Sustainability) among others. Ms. Shruchi Singh (Senior Program Lead) and the local team from S M Sehgal Foundation, along with Tank User Groups and the panchayat development officer were also present at the event.
