Sportz Village Foundation launches new partnerships to drive transformation using sport

‘Sport For Change’ goes mainstream in India’s development sector; Sportz Village Foundation launches new partnerships to drive transformation using sport

Sportz Village Foundation, India’s largest youth sports platform for social change, launches ‘Sport For Change’ programs in Govt. schools and new partnerships with leading corporates to drive positive change in the communities through sports. Sport has proven to be a key tool for development and transformation in the communities in the areas of physical and mental health, education, gender empowerment, life-skills development and youth leadership. Investing in sports for children/youth aids in the fulfilment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as the child’s Right to Play as per UN Convention of the Rights of the Child (OHCHR).

Recently, Sportz Village Foundation, with the support from The Muthoot Group, launched ‘Sport For Change’ program across a selected cluster of government schools in the Bangalore region. The Muthoot Group CSR initiative aims at driving change in educational and developmental outcomes of underprivileged children through the magic of sports. Through this partnership, Sportz Village Foundation baseline sports education program and structured sports curriculum will be introduced and implemented at the government schools covering more than 1200 children from Grade 1 to 5 with an objective to improve fitness, academic and social-emotional levels of the children.

In yet another unique partnership with Decathlon India, Sportz Village Foundation launched in-school Physical Education program across a cluster of schools in Bengaluru and Delhi NCR with an aim to ensure smooth return of over 2000 students (grades 1 to 8) to schools and improve fitness, academic and social-emotional levels of the children. The program also aims to train and engage Decathlon employee volunteers to implement the Sportz Village structured sports curriculum in the partner schools with continued capacity building, execution support, monitoring and impact assessments by Sportz Village Foundation. Decathlon India has been dedicated to the cause of ‘Sports for School Children’ since 2014.

Under a similar employee-led CSR initiative by Thomson Reuters, Sportz Village Foundation’s Sport Education curriculum was introduced across a cluster of schools in the Bengaluru region. Sportz Village Foundation conducted training programs for the employee volunteers from Thomson Reuters who will act as mentors in respective schools to engage with children through lesson plans and activities. The program culminated with school games comprising Kabaddi, Dodgeball, Volleyball and Throwball.

Sportz Village Foundation also partnered with like-minded organizations working in the area of sport for change. Sportz Village Foundation recently conducted ‘Sports For Development’ (S4D) workshops for program managers of the Laureus ‘Sport for Good City Delhi’ initiative in Seemapuri. 'Sport for Good City Delhi' is part of a global initiative by Laureus that uses the ‘Model City’ approach to improve the lives of local communities using sport as a catalyst for the change. The S4D workshop focused on capacity building of the program managers of the Laureus initiative with respect to curriculum/pedagogy, infrastructure, resource management and best practices in S4D. The participants included coalition members from various existing NGO partners as well as youth representatives/coaches for the program.

“It’s fantastic that the power of sport is now being recognized on an even wider scale. We, at Sportz Village Foundation, complete 5 years touching upon the lives of lakhs of children through sports. And it is still quite overwhelming to realize the positive change ‘play’ promotes in children from disadvantaged backgrounds. There truly is a sense of achievement and pride as we see children playing in our partner schools, Sport Development Centres (SDC) or High-performance Learning (HPL) Centres and as we inch a little closer towards Sportz Village’s mission of getting 100 million children to play.”, said Parminder Gill, Co-Founder, Sportz Village Foundation.
