Self-Reliant Initiatives through Joint Action (SRIJAN) was set up in 1997 informally and registered as a public charitable trust in January 2000. SRIJAN means an ‘act of creation’ in Sanskrit. The full name, Self-Reliant Initiatives through Joint Action, has two themes embedded in it: ‘self-reliance’ and ‘joint action’. We at SRIJAN believe that development cannot be promoted on large scale through charity and grants; ways must be found to execute models of poverty alleviation through the promotion of self-reliance and enhancing self-respect of ‘beneficiaries’. In addition, any NGO cannot bring about development in ‘isolation’: they must act jointly, in collaboration with various stakeholders and the Government to create change.

SRIJAN's USP lies in 'developing and replicating unique and innovative community-owned sustainable livelihood models leading to dignity for all'. Till date, SRIJAN has impacted 86,545 poor families across 7 States namely, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Odisha, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh.
