About the organization

The Kalgidhar Society - Baru Sahib is a philanthropic non-profit organization dedicated to offering quality education to combat the alarming rise in Gender Inequality, Domestic violence, Drug Abuse and Alcohol consumption. The organization has been significant in the socio-economic uplift of the impoverished in far-flung rural parts of North India, emphasizing Healthcare, Women Empowerment, and Social Welfare. On September 28, 2020, the Punjab Planning Department conferred the Kalgidhar Trust with the United Nations Development Programme's SDGCC-supported SDG Action Award (for attaining sustainable development goals).
Today, 129 low-cost CBSE Schools adorn the rural regions of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, and lagging hilly districts of Himachal Pradesh by offering comprehensive, value-based education to over 65,000 students. The students are primarily from the deprived sections of society, admitted regardless of caste, creed, region, religion and social status. The goal is to build 500 low-cost schools to provide value-based education to all village children. In addition, our organization operates two universities, a Women Educational Skill Development Center to empower rural girls, a 120-bed Charitable Hospital in the remote and rural hilly district of Sirmaur (HP), two Drug De-addiction Centers (Sangrur, Punjab & Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh), and one Rehabilitation Center for distressed women at Baru Sahib.

Our Approach & Guiding Thoughts: Our Founding Fathers (Sant Attar Singh Ji, Sant Teja Singh Ji & their disciple Sant Baba Iqbal Singh Ji) believed in Blending worldly education with spirituality. Spirituality is the management of ego and vices, and spiritual education is the formation of an absolute person with three essential traits of tolerance, seriousness, and patience. The development of exceptional human character and high moral values in children and adolescents was envisioned to ensure permanent world peace and universal fraternity. They advocated the girl-child's education in an era when women's equality was still not acknowledged. They emphasized that the first step toward establishing peace was to create decent human material.

- Educational Equity: The Akal Academy Baru Sahib are committed to identifying and eliminating barriers to educational achievement in our schools. To this end, we create policies and practices that are fair and just and provide educational opportunities to ensure that every student, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, marital status, age, national origin, or economic status, meets our standards for achievement, participation and growth.
- Sustainable Programs Undertaken by The Society:
- Himachal Pradesh’s Largest standalone Solar PV Power Generation plant of 200 KW was installed at our Headquarters in 2011, reducing electricity bills to 35% and carbon emissions to 5,850 metric tonnes from the environment.
- Solar water heating system of capacity - 18,000 litres/day to meet the heated water requirement of the campus for various activities. Helping in saving 1,460 LPG cylinders per year.
- Dish type Solar cookers - 6 nos. Helping save 18,250 LPG cylinders per year and feed 5,500 persons per day.
- Sheffler Type Solar Heat Concentrators -2 Nos.
- Solar Street Lights -16 Nos.
- Solar PV Domestic Lights -10 Nos.
- 245 KW of aggregated Solar PV power plants in 45 Schools funded under the CSR initiative for Sustainable. Development by BHEL Ltd.
- Installed 1.2 MW Solar PV power plants in 14 Schools under the Solar Energy Corporation of India scheme. The total aggregated capacity of the Solar PV plant is 1.7 MW which stands as the largest for any rural educational chain.
- Liquid and Solid waste of the entire Lana Bhalta Gram Panchayat in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh is voluntarily managed by our trust through the latest technologies.
- Sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 10 lakh liters of water
- Recycling and reusing Plastic Waste by making bricks and structures and every possible waste material have emerged Lana Bhalta as one of the cleanest panchayats in the State.
- 118 Flush Free/Odour Free/ Waterless Urinals installed at Akal Academy, Baru Sahib campus.
