About the organization

Our story began in 2003 when a group of passionate individuals, who considered sports/play as a child’s fundamental need, got together to form Sportz Village. It is now India’s largest youth sports platform that is on a mission to get 100 million kids by integrating sports into school education and developing grassroots sports programs. Sportz Village Foundation, a Sportz Village subsidiary, was founded in 2017 with an objective to drive change in disadvantaged children & youth by improving their health, education, and development-related outcomes using play/ physical activity. Sportz Village Foundation is committed to transforming the lives of children belonging to underprivileged communities through the magic of sports. Sportz Village Foundation focuses on serving children in Government schools through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partnerships.

Sportz Village Foundation’s pioneering ‘Sport for Change’ program uses physical activity and sports to drive change in schools in terms of health, education, and empowerment of children. The program is scientifically researched, highly tested, and well-integrated into the core education process of the schools, also aligns with the UNSDG (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals) such as good health, quality education, gender equality, and sustainable communities. The organization is currently working with over 1300 schools across 250 locations, positively impacting 7,00,000 children. SVF is also on the panel of NSDC, CII, NITI Aayog, and several state governments as a strategic partner and advisor for sports education.

Our ‘Sport for Change’ program has the following key components:

Why should a corporate partner with organization?

The sport for Change program is designed to solve the following problems in children from marginalized communities:

1. Health

  • Poor health: 2 out of 3 children do not have a healthy BMI
  • Higher evidence of noncommunicable diseases among students: 12% of children die (age group up to 14 years) due to Non-Communicable diseases
  • Poor mental and psychological health: 1 out of 4 Indian children between the age groups of 13 years to 15 years suffer from depression

2. Education

  • Poor attendance: Data for upper primary schools show a decline in attendance percentage from 77% in 2009 to 73.2% in 2016
  • High drop-out rate: 47 million children in India drop out of school by the 10th grade
  • Poor learning skills: 25% of children in the age groups of 14 years to 18 years cannot read the basic text in their mother tongue

3. Empowerment & Livelihood

  • Only 2.3% of India’s workforce has undergone any formal skill-based training

4. Outcomes of Sportz Village Foundation ‘Sport for Change’ programs:

  • Education: Global studies have shown that the inclusion of PE and Sports has led to an increase in the attendance from 89.9% in 2000/01 to 94.2% in 2005/06
  • Health: Research has shown that 60 minutes of rigorous play time every day is ideal for a growing child to be healthy and fit
  • Empowerment & Livelihood: After adopting Sports in their routine 7 out of 10 girls have shown improvement in their Social-Emotional Skills.

5. ‘Sport for Change’ Impact:

  • The Sportz Village Impact Study examined the impact of a structured sports program on the attendance, behavior, and academic attainment of students at various partner schools where the Sportz Village sports education model has been established. The results strongly imply a positive effect of playing sports on the children directly engaged in the program in terms of school attendance, social-emotional learning, educational attainment, and overall physical + mental wellbeing
  • Daily physical activity is necessary not just for preventing physical chronic diseases but also for addressing psycho-social disorders. Apart from direct benefits, sports programs can also be used to promote healthy behaviors and hygiene awareness - an area that majorly affects disadvantaged communities. For a developing young nation like ours, it is necessary to inculcate healthy and active lifestyle habits at a young age and across classes, who in turn will contribute to nation-building
  • Playing sports has a positive effect on mental health, self-perception, concentration, and memory. To analyze the extent to which sports participation can affect students’ academic performance, Sportz Village Foundation surveyed to identify the proficiency levels of students in three core subjects, i.e. Mathematics, Science, and Social studies. The findings indicate that there are incrementally higher grades amongst the students who partake in physical activity frequently: a 24% increase in Math scores, a 25% increase in Science grades, and 25% in Social Studies scores
  • There is good evidence that participation in sports can help break-down gender stereotypes and improve women’s self-esteem, which further translates into everyday life encouraging girls to set aside the social, economic, and cultural barriers. It is only obvious to determine how sports can be a great tool for the upliftment of girls from deprived communities who lie at the bottom of the strata in terms of access to school education, good health, and employment opportunities. As gender equality and women’s empowerment are fundamental components of sustainable development, providing sports and playing opportunities to more and more girls will be a game-changer.

We say that #SportForChange is an area that needs immediate attention from school authorities and leaders, policymakers, and corporate donors alike - to bring about positive developmental outcomes for school children. With the active support of the state, corporates, and civil society, we continue on our mission to get more and more children from schools across India to play and improve their lives through the power of sport.
