About the organization

In 1992, few passionate people started Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra (SNM) with a simple concept of bird watching. With time it evolved into an organization that started engaging communities for nature conservation. SNM's core objective is - to conserve biodiversity, with sustainability, through community engagement and government collaboration. The organization came into being from simple beginnings of a bird observation hobby and general research on birds and their habitats, threats, and conservation methods. With the years of evolution and a single guiding vision has now led SNM to focus on the conservation of endangered species through community engagement and conducting related research. SNM has achieved many feathers in its cap for effectively protecting and preserving the rich local biodiversity as well as blossoming the lives of many.

The organization has successfully established a number of conservation initiatives across the Konkan region stretching over 720 km of the west coast of Indian Land. Being enthusiastic and innovative the building block of the organization is a tiny little principle as “Nature conservation through livelihood generation”, which has anchored all the activities in the Konkan region.

Enabled and motivated community to rescue 12 Pangolins in collaboration with the forest department by working with 955 villages in Ratnagiri; introduced a chapter on India Pangolin in school curriculum reaching 1.6 million students every year in Maharashtra.
•Transformed the mindset of turtle poachers and smugglers from 40 villages and turned them into conservationist who released more than 75309 turtle hatchlings in the sea  between 2002-2014 across 720 KM of the coastal region of Maharashtra, India
•Created a Vulture Restaurant - feeding ground, with the support of 50 Villages around Anjarla; reducing false incubation and increasing breeding success by 32% and 40% government of Maharashtra to compensate coconut tree owner to conserve Vulture nest on the Coconut tree.
•Conducted groundbreaking research to discover 64 nests of White Bellied Sea Eagle updating the scientific community's old estimates of only 4 remaining nests across the Konkan region.
•Influenced Wildlife Board of Maharashtra includes Indian Swiflet in Schedule-I species; Collaborated with the Forest-Department and arrested poachers, protecting 5000 swiflet nests.
•SNM trained & engaged directly 2000 school students and indirectly 10000 school students in mammal study through the e-mammal citizen-science initiative. In the past two years, students collected more than 3 lakh trap camera images including endangered species Tiger, Indian Pangolin, and Asiatic Wild Dog, etc.
